Be Still My Heart!

Last Friday I joined two friends for a few hours of bargain hunting at some estate sales. The first two were interesting: one was a "tear down" -- a hoarder's house that was going to be torn down after the conclusion of the sale, so things were pretty cheap. However, they were also pretty disgusting. I didn't take pictures. The second was an upscale townhouse, with prices to match. Didn't buy anything there.

Then we went to our last sale, up a long, bumpy driveway. The estate sale company organizing this sale was one I had dealt with before; they engage in a lot of good-natured joshing. There wasn't much at that house either, until I reached a bedroom. And there was a cabinet with a hand-printed sign on it: "Bernina".

Hmm.

This picture was taken in my sewing room, so I'll spoil the suspense and say yes, I did buy it.

When I opened the cabinet, this is what I found.

Whoa. It was certainly the right cabinet for my sewing room: the avocado green organizers on the door even match the baseboard trim.

It is a Bernina Record 930 Electronic, nestled in a Horn cabinet. I opened the drawers and found this:

Do you know how much Bernina feet cost?? A lot. And this was a case full of them, including one that had never been opened.

Now comes the part where all my sewing friends are going to come after me with pitchforks.

I paid $125 for the whole thing: machine and cabinet. And they even loaded it into the van for me.

Now that it's all set up in its new home, I'm going to play around with it by sewing some new projects that I have lined up.

  1. OMG! The machine alone goes for about $1000 give or take with the recession. It's even the one with the needle up/down feature by manipulating the foot control. Awesome find! I have one and it's a wonderful machine. Mine doesn't have the needle up/down thingy or I would probably still be sewing on it.

  2. Oh how wonderful for you! While I have moved to industrial machines, I don't think I'll ever give up my 930. It's a mechanical marvel!

  3. Welmoed, you hit the jackpot! Yay for you!

  4. This shows what people think sewing machines are worth. Basically, the typical non-sewing person believes that all machines are worth what you would pay for a low-end machine at Costco.

However, I'm sure the former owner would be *thrilled* that you got it, will appreciate it, and will SEW with it!

  13. I'm jealous, and I even own my own 930, that I too will never get rid of. "She" is my very first "good" machine I ever got and I'm very attached. Even though she's retired, I just can't say good-bye!
    Awesome find! Congratulations!

  14. Wow!!! What a find! My first Bernina was a 930 and I passed it on to my mom and took her 830 in exchange, I was upgrading. The 830 was used for approx 25 years and never needed a repair. I did have it overhauled and it sits in my sewing room. My 930 was almost 10 years old when she was handed over, it was barely used. I really miss that machine but would have to have luck like yours to replace her.

You will love your 930, keep us posted on your bonding with her.

My old Matic 910 still stays with me, even though she is retired. Cannot part with my first Bernina yet. I have a 240 Activa Bernina.
    Looking for a embroidery machine.

    Good luck! Ronda
