Whoohoo! I'm Unique!

I always knew my name was not terribly common. Now I'm sure of it!

How many have your name?

It's that "or fewer" part that has me a bit concerned... Perhaps I don't exist at all?

My new job!

This month, my husband Bob officially hired me to work for his company, Inspections by Bob. My official title is "Marketing Director" -- which is just a fancy way of saying I'm supposed to help increase his work load. Luckily, I'll still have time for sewing, which I'll certainly need for my sanity.
One of my main responsibilities will be writing for the company blog, Home Inspection Confidential. If you get a chance, go check it out. I'll be posting a lot about what I saw at the two conventions we attended in Las Vegas, as well as highlights from Bob's inspections. You could learn quite a bit about how your house works, and what to look for when buying a new or existing home.
While you're at the site, you can sign up for our home safety emails, which come out about twice a month and have some pretty funny pictures from Bob's inspections. Honestly, you wouldn't believe some of the things Bob sees. Luckily, he likes to take pictures of those things, and I get to post them.
So come on over!

Okay, maybe Vegas isn't so bad after all...

I'm in Las Vegas with my husband, attending two trade shows. The first was the Inspection World conference, which is a gathering of home inspectors. The second was the National Association of Home Builders show, which was HUGE. It took us two days to get through both exhibit halls.

And, of course, I filled out lots of entries for drawings.

Last night Bob got an email from the folks at the Lowes booth, asking me to contact them (my electronic name tag for the conference had Bob's email on it rather than mine). This morning I called them, and they asked if we were still in town, because I had won a prize. We weren't planning on going to the show today, but figured that if I won something, I might as well pull on my work uniform and go down one last time.
So, I get to the booth and meet the person who had called me. She asks me to wait a minute; then all these people in blue Lowes shirts start filtering into the area. They start by saying that I won... a tube of Chapstick!!! No, no, just kidding... you won a little First Aid kit! No, really... you won a portable tire inflator!
The hysterical thing is, these three items were all things I either needed or wanted, so I was quite happy with them.  But then they start leading me towards something else... and out of 6,000 entries, my name was drawn to win this:

Yep, I won a new 2010 Chevy Silverado!!! Do I look happy or what?

Actually, I won an allowance towards a car of equal value when I get home. What was really funny was, on our way to the convention center this morning, we were joking that if we had won a car, we'd have to figure out a way to get it home by Monday, when we both have appointments.

I big shout-out to Lowes for this fabulous prize; Guess where I'll be doing all my hardware shopping from now on?

Danger: Mom With Embroidery Machine

My daughter's first-semester roommate decided the school wasn't for her, so Diana had to find another roommate for the second semester. Fortunately, one of her friends wanted to change roommates, so she will be moving into Diana's room for the second half of the year (along with her three snakes).

Remember the sign I made for Diana? Now she was going to need a new one. This time around I decided to make one with an owl theme, since the owl is the school mascot.

The owl design came from Embroidery Library, and the lettering was done with Embird's font engine.

Now I Have Two Uniforms!

I got a second uniform finished in time for the conference! This time, it's a blouse with side darts and a shirt collar, and a tapered skirt.

It's the same fabric as the first uniform, and the patterns were drafted with PatternMaster Boutique. I think the blouse fits much better; maybe because there's a bit more ease in the waist, maybe because it's got side bust darts rather than just a waist dart.

The skirt is a darted draft with tapered side seams (otherwise known at pegged), with a center back zipper and contoured waistband.

There's also a kick pleat in the center back seam, for ease of walking.

And, of course, pockets. I used the same type as for the pants I made earlier.

So, now I have four uniform options for next week. I'll feel so professional at the conference!

What a Productive Day!

Today was simply wonderful. I'm getting ready to attend a convention in Las Vegas with my husband, and since I am now working for him, I needed to have an official uniform to wear. So, of course, I had to make one.

Both the shirt and the pants were drafted with PatternMaster Boutique. The shirt has a waist dart and a convertible collar, with the company logo embroidered on the left front. The pants are a boot-cut draft, and I didn't iron them before having the picture taken. They'll be properly pressed before the convention!

They fit wonderfully, and are so comfortable. I used a 3/4" contoured waistband.

Boy, they really do need pressing. So does the shirt.

The pockets came out really well; I used a trouser pocket and made the bag out of a lighter fabric; this avoids too much bulk at the hip.

I've also finished a skirt in the same green fabric, and am working on a second blouse that I hope to finish tomorrow. I'll post pictures of that outfit when it's done.
