Making an Inverness Coat, Part 1 Wow, it's been a year since I last posted a project. Sorry to leave you all hanging. I haven't really been doing much sewing over the past year; life has been getting in the way. But I'm now embarking on a project for Bob and myself: costumes for a Dickens-themed holiday party on New Year's Eve. Bob and I spent several hours researching styles we wanted, finding reference pictures and talking about colors. Bob was interested in having a cape, but after a few discussions, he found a picture of the kind he wanted: an Inverness Cape Coat. Pretty straight-forward, you would think. Little did I know how many different variations of this style existed. One of them is the Ulster Coat , which looks just like an Inverness from the front, but there are notable differences: The Ulster style is a coat with a cape over it. Cut Fabric with a Silhouette Cameo? YES!

It's no surprise that I love my Silhouette Cameo cutter. I keep finding new ways to use it! The latest discovery is that I can cut fabric on it, without having to fuse the fabric to an interfacing first! This is great, because interfacing permanently changes the hand of the fabric, and sometimes I just don't want that. But cutting fabric without it can result in a snarled mess. So what's the answer? You need a Secret Weapon: Good old-fashioned spray starch! Lay the fabric wrong-side-up on your work surface and give it a good, long spray with the starch. You want to really saturate the fabric. Let it soak in for a few seconds, then lay a press cloth on top (to protect your iron) and press the fabric, using the hottest setting you can. Since this is quilting cotton, I've got my Rowenta cranked up to maximum. Don't use steam! When it's dry, spray it again and press it again. Make sure it's absolutely bone-dry. Otakon 2012: Jafar's Staff

My son Ian is coming to Otakon this year for the first time, and he will be dressing up as Jafar from Disney's Aladdin . This costume has two very important elements: the huge turban, and the snake-head staff. We looked online for staffs to purchase, but most of them didn't even closely resemble the cobra-headed staff in the movie: So I got to work making one. The first order of business was trying to figure out how to get the snake-head shape. Then I remembered we had a leftover prop from our Halloween Haunt days: (Note: this is a picture from the Fakerubbersnakes website; I forgot to take a picture of the whole fake snake prior to starting the process) I decapitated the snake: But with that open mouth, it didn't look much like the movie staff.
